This set of spoken Chinese textbooks is divided into beginning and intermediate volumes. The beginning text is for use by beginners who have already studied about 300 vocabulary words. The intermediate text is for use by those who have already studied 800 or so vocabulary words.

The content of these texts takes as background the social communication situations that foreigners living in China often come across. Emphasis was placed on selecting the most practical, the best, and most frequently used sentences, the goal being to enable the student to quickly improve his ability in oral communication within a relatively short period of time. Certain methods of expression and terms of social intercourse are explained through annotations so that the student will glean some cultural knowledge and understanding while studying spoken Chinese.

Many exercises of various types are arranged and designed to inspire the student to repeatedly utilize important language features studied in the lessons - often-used sentence structures, conversational structures, social discourse guidelines for conversation. Emphasis is on increasing the student's ability to express his own thoughts. Additional practice materials are added at the end of the lessons to supplement the topic taught.

The texts can be used as intensive training materials to fortify short-term course in spoken Chinese, and can also be used as regular teaching materials in weekly classes, as well as for self-study.
